Joanna Travis
MSc, Cert MRCSLT, MASLTIP, HCPC Registered
I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist with a Masters degree from University College London in 2008. Since then I have worked extensively with young children in NHS Trusts, independently and in the charitable sector. I have continued to train in new approaches and techniques and am currently studying for a Masters in Applied Neuroscience to support and inform my work with children with acquired brain injuries and neurodevelopmental disorders. I am committed to helping children achieve their speech, language and communication potential, which is so important to their wider development and self-esteem.

I am passionate about treating children as individuals with their own unique strengths and needs, and I use a variety of different approaches in therapy. I prefer to work with children in their own homes where they feel most comfortable and where we can work together as a team; therapist, family and child.

I have experience working with children from as young as 18 months up to 18 years, however I specialise in children of pre-school and Key Stage 1 age, 2-7 years. Please do get in touch if your child is outside these ages to see if I can help.

I have worked with children with a wide range of difficulties, including but not limited to; Developmental Language Disorder, motor speech difficulties, Autism Spectrum Disorder, children with neurodevelopmental disorders including Cerebral Palsy, children with more complex needs including global developmental delay and children with speech and language difficulties as a result of acquired brain injury. I have a special interest in both low and high tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices.

I am trained in the Hanen It Takes Two To Talk programme for children with delayed language development, the Lidcombe programme for children who stammer and the Nuffield Dyspraxia programme. I have Level One TalkTools training and extensive experience in both low and high tech supportive communication systems including Makaton signing and Picture Exchange Communication (PECS). I am trained in the assessment of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADODS) although I do not offer this privately.
